Sony FX2 Review: Specifications, Video Performance and FX3 Comparison

In this Sony FX2 review, we examine Sony’s newly announced FX2 cinema camera in detail across technical specifications, sensor design and video performance. Its 33-megapixel full-frame, back-illuminated Exmor R sensor combines high resolution with a video-oriented body. The FX2 introduces several important differences from the Sony A7S III and FX3. Below, we compare the FX2 in detail across sensor, video capability, ergonomics, autofocus, artificial intelligence, battery, storage, connectivity and accessory support. We also include professional opinions from established sources and early user comments.

Sony FX2 Review: Sensor, Resolution and ISO Performance
Sensor and Resolution: The Sony FX2 uses a 33-megapixel, back-illuminated Exmor R CMOS full-frame sensor. It is the same sensor introduced in the Sony A7 IV in 2021 and provides high stills resolution and detailed video. The A7S III and FX3 instead use 12.1 MP Exmor R full-frame sensors designed specifically for low-light performance. The FX2 therefore offers almost three times the resolution of the other two cameras, which means more detail for stills and 4K video. The trade-off is a slower sensor readout, and users have emphasised that rolling shutter—the bending of vertical lines in moving scenes—can be more visible. Some early comments reported that the higher-megapixel FX2 reads more slowly than the FX3 and FX30 and may show a stronger jello effect during fast pans.
ISO Range and Dual Base ISO: The FX2 offers an expanded ISO range of 80–409,600. In S-Log3 video, the dual base ISO values are 800 and 4,000, allowing the camera to preserve optimum dynamic range in both brighter and lower-light scenes. Sony states that the sensor provides more than 15 stops of dynamic range, retaining substantial detail in highlights and shadows. The A7S III and FX3 use dual base ISO values of 640 and 12,800 in S-Log3, although Sony has also described the FX3 values as 800 and 12,800, and provide close to 15 stops of dynamic range. Their expanded ISO ranges also reach 80–409,600 on paper, but their 12 MP sensors produce cleaner images and less noise at very high sensitivities such as ISO 12,800 and above. The A7S III and FX3 therefore retain an advantage in low light. The FX2 remains clean through medium and high ISO values, but its smaller pixels can produce more noise at the highest settings.
Photography Performance: The high-resolution sensor gives the FX2 an important advantage beyond video. At 33 MP, it produces detailed still images and can capture photographs during video recording. Pressing the shutter while recording saves JPEG or HEIF frames in a Log profile, while normal stills mode supports continuous shooting at up to 10 fps with either the mechanical or electronic shutter. The 12 MP A7S III and FX3 remain adequate for general photography but offer less flexibility for professional printing and cropping. Their lower pixel count, however, reduces electronic-shutter rolling-shutter risk and can help the buffer clear more quickly.
Note: the FX3 and A7S III also have mechanical shutters, unlike the FX30. This allows motion distortion in stills to be reduced independently of the sensor’s electronic readout speed.

Video Recording Formats and Frame Rates
Resolution and Frame-Rate Support: The Sony FX2 records full-width 4K at 24p and 30p by oversampling from approximately 7K, producing a very detailed and sharp image. At 4K60, the sensor’s readout limit requires an approximately 1.5× APS-C/Super 35 crop. In this mode, the camera reads approximately 4.7K from the centre of the sensor and downsamples it to 4K. The FX2 does not support higher rates such as 4K120. High-frame-rate work therefore uses cropped APS-C 4K60 or Full HD, where recording reaches 120 fps and produces up to five-times slow motion when played at 24p. Ten-bit 4:2:2 colour sampling remains available in both 4K60 and Full HD 120 modes.
A7S III and FX3 Video Capability: The lower-resolution sensors in the A7S III and FX3 record full-frame 4K at up to 120 fps, with only a very small crop of approximately 1.1× at 120 fps. They also reach 240 fps in Full HD, giving them a clear advantage for action and slow motion. Because their 12 MP sensors produce 4K through close to one-to-one pixel readout or light horizontal oversampling, their image can appear slightly softer than the FX2’s oversampled 4K at standard frame rates. CineD’s first assessment expected the FX2’s 24–30p output to be sharper and more detailed than the FX3, while the FX3 and A7S III remain superior when high-frame-rate recording is required. In short, the FX2 prioritises image quality at standard frame rates; the A7S III and FX3 prioritise extreme ISO and slow-motion performance.
Recording Formats and Quality: All three cameras use the XAVC family internally: XAVC S with H.264 long-GOP compression, XAVC HS with H.265 and XAVC S-I with All-Intra H.264. Recordings use ten-bit 4:2:2 colour sampling, providing enough colour information for professional grading. The FX2 supports internal DCI 4K at 4096 × 2160, 24.00p, ten-bit 4:2:2 All-Intra. The FX3 and A7S III provide comparable DCI 4K and UHD All-Intra options. All three can output 16-bit RAW over HDMI. The FX2 can send a 4.7K Super 35 RAW signal to an external recorder such as the Atomos Ninja V+, although full-frame 4K external RAW support is not specified. None of the three records RAW video internally.
Image Profiles and Colour: All three models support S-Log3 and S-Cinetone. The FX2 can also capture stills in S-Log3 and preview a user LUT in the camera, helping maintain a consistent colour workflow across stills and video. The FX2 and FX3 provide cinema-style ISO-control modes such as Cine EI and Cine EI Quick. These were not present on the A7S III at launch, while the FX3 received similar functions later through firmware. Another FX2 difference is anamorphic de-squeeze monitoring. With 1.33× or 2.0× anamorphic lenses, the operator can view the image in the correct proportion in the EVF or LCD. This was not available on the A7S III or FX3 and makes the FX2 more attractive for filmmakers using anamorphic glass.
Internal ND Filter and Active Cooling System
Internal ND Filter: The Sony FX2 has no internal neutral-density filter, just like the FX3 and A7S III. Their compact mirrorless E-mount bodies do not contain the optical variable-ND system used in larger Sony Cinema Line cameras such as the FX6, FX9 and VENICE. Users welcomed the tilting EVF but continued to identify the absence of integrated ND as a limitation. Some filmmakers said that a future FX4 would be ideal if it added internal ND. FX2 users therefore still need external screw-in filters or a matte-box solution.
Active Cooling and Overheating: The FX2 includes an active cooling fan. Sony states that the improved heat-dissipation structure and fan allow up to thirteen hours of continuous recording in 4K60. In practical terms, battery and storage capacity will normally become limits before the camera stops for heat. The FX3 also uses an internal fan and reduces the overheating risk of long sessions to a minimum. The A7S III uses effective passive cooling but can display thermal warnings during intensive operation, particularly at high ambient temperatures and in 4K60 or 4K120. The FX3 largely resolved this issue and the fan-cooled FX2 provides similar confidence. CineD emphasised that active cooling removes the restricted oversampled-4K recording times associated with the A7 IV. The FX2 and FX3 are consequently safer for long productions, while the A7S III can remain dependent on ambient conditions after extended 4K recording.
Cooling-System Differences: The fan adds several millimetres of thickness to the FX2 and FX3 and creates the possibility of very low fan noise, but it is designed to remain quiet enough not to cause a problem during normal recording. The A7S III is completely silent because it has no fan, although long sessions require greater thermal awareness. The FX2 shares the FX3’s width and depth but is taller because of the EVF. Rear and side exhaust vents maintain airflow and make uninterrupted 4K recording possible.
Body Design and Ergonomics
Design and Ergonomics: The FX2 largely inherits the compact, angular Cinema Line body of the FX3. Its magnesium-alloy chassis contains three integrated 1/4-inch-20 mounting points on the upper and side surfaces and two further mounting points on the base, making cage-free operation and direct accessory mounting easier. The handgrip is deep and similar to the FX3, maintaining comfortable handheld ergonomics. B&H noted that the FX2 shares many FX3 design elements but is slightly taller and lighter because of the viewfinder structure. The body remains compact and balanced.
Electronic Viewfinder: The most visible design difference is the integrated 3.68-million-dot OLED EVF. Most compact cinema cameras, including the FX3, have no viewfinder. The FX2 unit can tilt upwards through 90 degrees, allowing the operator to keep an eye on the finder from low or high angles. Tilting viewfinders are common on traditional camcorders but rare on mirrorless cameras, and industry reviewers praised the design. Its 3.68-million-dot resolution is lower than the A7S III’s very sharp 9.44-million-dot, 0.9× EVF, but it is sufficiently detailed for video composition and uses a deep eyecup to block external light. The EVF becomes a major advantage in bright sunlight, when judging the rear screen is difficult. The A7S III already has a high-resolution finder, while the FX3 has none and is less convenient for eye-level stills or video. The FX2 combines the FX3’s cinema body with the viewfinder advantage of an A7S-style camera.
Rear Screen: All three cameras use a fully articulating rear LCD. The FX2’s three-inch touchscreen is limited to approximately 1.03 million dots, below the roughly 1.44 million dots of the FX3 and A7S III. It remains adequate for composition, menus and touch focus, but the other screens look slightly sharper. The FX2 also provides the mode-dependent BIG6 home interface, presenting frame rate, shutter speed or angle, ISO, white balance, aperture and ND-related settings as large, quickly accessible fields. Inspired by the FX6 and FX9, it allows critical video settings to be seen at a glance. A similar interface later arrived on the FX3 through firmware.
Controls and Interface: The upper panel and body contain many physical controls, including a large red record button with tally illumination, a stills/movie switch and dedicated white-balance and ISO controls. Seven customisable buttons are distributed across the front and rear, and tally lights are visible from both sides. The A7S III uses a more traditional stills-camera form with a PASM dial and fewer 1/4-inch mounting points. The FX2 and FX3 have no conventional mode dial; a direct stills/movie switch changes the interface for hybrid use. Their controls and menus prioritise video functions such as shutter angle, waveform and vectorscope displays and audio-level monitoring.
Size and Weight: The three bodies are similar in overall class but use different shapes. The FX2 and FX3 are approximately 130 mm wide and around 80–84 mm deep. The FX2 reaches 103.6 mm in height because of the integrated viewfinder, compared with approximately 84.5 mm for the FX3. The A7S III is roughly 97 mm high including its finder and around 129 mm wide. With battery, the FX2 weighs approximately 677 g, the FX3 around 714 g and the A7S III about 699 g. The FX2 is slightly lighter than the FX3 despite its viewfinder. These differences are small in real use: all three remain compact full-frame bodies in the 700 g class. The box-shaped FX2 and FX3 balance easily on gimbals and rigs, while the deep grip supports comfortable handheld use. Cage-free accessory mounting is a significant ergonomic advantage.

Autofocus Features and Artificial-Intelligence Support
AF System Foundation: All three models use Sony’s fast Hybrid AF system with phase-detection points across a wide area of the sensor. The A7S III and FX3, for example, use 759 AF points covering approximately 92 per cent of the frame. The key difference is that the FX2 adds a dedicated artificial-intelligence processing unit to the BIONZ XR processor, using deep learning to improve recognition and tracking. The FX3 and A7S III do not contain this separate AI hardware and use the earlier generation of Real-time Tracking.
Subject Recognition and Tracking: Real-time Recognition AF identifies people, animals, birds, insects, cars, trains and aircraft. Auto mode can determine the subject type in the scene and prioritise it without requiring the operator to select a category. This lets the FX2 adapt quickly as subjects change. The A7S III and FX3 have excellent human face and eye tracking but no equally broad AI recognition list. Animal-eye support is restricted to selected modes, and automatic recognition of vehicles or insects is absent. The FX2 system is therefore more intelligent and comprehensive. Professional reviews report up to approximately 30 per cent better human recognition and tracking sensitivity than the FX3, a meaningful improvement in documentary and wedding work.
Eye and Face Tracking: All three cameras rank among the strongest systems for real-time human eye and face tracking. The A7S III and FX3 were already performing calculations continuously, and the FX2 uses AI to improve reliability further. It can track animal and bird eyes in both stills and video, an advantage for wildlife documentaries and pet content. The A7S III introduced animal-eye tracking in stills but remained focused on human tracking in video; the FX3 followed a similar pattern. The FX2 extends animal and bird recognition into video as well.
AF Tracking Performance: The higher-resolution sensor does not remove wide-area tracking, although users speculated that the slower readout might create a small delay with extremely fast subjects or rapid pans. Sony’s algorithms and processing minimise this risk. Early reviews described the autofocus as proven and reliable, with noticeably improved subject tracking over the FX3 and FX30, particularly in complex scenes. Recognition of cars and bicycles is a practical addition in the field.
New AI-Assisted Functions: AI is also used for framing and stabilisation. Auto Framing recognises a person or object in a wider tripod shot and digitally pans or zooms to keep it centred, creating the impression of an invisible camera operator. Because the system moves a smaller sensor area, it adds a crop. Dynamic Active adds AI movement analysis to standard Active electronic stabilisation and produces smoother walking footage, again with some additional crop. The A7S III and FX3 include five-axis IBIS and standard Active mode but not Dynamic Active. Framing Stabilizer also makes small AI corrections to maintain a fixed horizon or subject position during movement.
Other AF Tools: The FX2 includes AF Assist for manual intervention during autofocus, adjustable transition speed and tracking sensitivity, and Focus Breathing Compensation with supported lenses. Most of these functions also exist on the A7S III and FX3. The FX2 integrates them directly into its cinema-camera interface and optimises focus-confirmation tools for modes such as Cine EI.
Battery Performance and Storage Options
Battery Life: The FX2 uses the same 7.2 V, 16.4 Wh NP-FZ100 lithium-ion battery as the A7S III and FX3, allowing existing batteries and chargers to be shared. The A7S III and FX3 normally provide approximately 60–90 minutes of practical 4K recording per battery, depending on temperature and recording format. The fan may consume a small amount of additional power, but BIONZ XR efficiency keeps the difference limited. Early users reported battery behaviour close to the A7S III, including approximately 80 minutes of S-Log3 4K30 recording. USB-C Power Delivery can feed the camera from an external battery during long sessions. Overall, the FX2 remains in the familiar NP-FZ100 endurance class and can produce hundreds of photographs or around an hour of 4K video from one battery.
Storage and Card Slots: The FX2 has two card slots configured as one hybrid CFexpress Type A/SD UHS-II slot and one SD UHS-II-only slot. Both slots in the FX3 and A7S III accept either CFexpress Type A or SD UHS-II. For simultaneous backup in the highest-bit-rate modes, the second FX2 card must be a sufficiently fast V90 SD card. A single CFexpress Type A or fast SD card can record modes such as 4K60 ten-bit without difficulty. CFexpress Type A becomes particularly valuable for sustained high-speed stills or exceptional data rates. The SD-only second slot was noted as a disadvantage by some users, although high-quality V60 and V90 SD cards meet the requirements of most FX2 workflows.
Recording Time and Data Management: Detailed oversampled 4K can create files comparable with or slightly larger than those from the A7S III and FX3. All-Intra 4K can write approximately 5 GB per minute, with 50p and 60p increasing the demand further. Cards of 128 GB or more are advisable for long production days. The two slots can be used for simultaneous recording or relay recording. During a long interview, the camera can move to the second card without interrupting the recording when the first becomes full.
HDMI Output, Monitoring and Audio Input/Output Options
HDMI and Monitor Connections: The FX2 uses a professional full-size Type-A HDMI connector rather than fragile micro HDMI. The A7S III and FX3 use the same format. All three output 4K60 ten-bit 4:2:2 and support 16-bit RAW, allowing compatible external recorders to capture ProRes RAW or similar formats. Sony did not specify whether the FX2 port follows the complete HDMI 2.1 standard, but 4K60 ten-bit 4:2:2 is supported.
Other Connections — USB and LAN: All three models include USB Type-C. The FX2 port supports 10 Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 and UVC/UAC video and audio transport. Connected directly to a computer, the camera can operate as a plug-and-play webcam or closed-circuit camera at up to 4K30. The A7S III did not include this at launch and later received limited related functions through firmware; the FX3 was originally listed without UVC/UAC support. The FX2 also supports direct streaming through 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi-Fi or USB-C using RTMP and SRT protocols. This creates the possibility of connecting directly to the internet without a computer. A compatible USB-C Ethernet adapter provides wired LAN for streaming or file transfer, a connection not emphasised in the original A7S III or FX3 specifications.
Audio Input and Output: Every model includes standard 3.5 mm microphone and headphone sockets. The FX2 and FX3 also support an XLR-equipped top handle supplied or offered as a kit. The FX3 is supplied with the XLR-H1-style handle containing two XLR/TRS inputs. On the FX2, the same concept is optional through body-only or XLR-handle-kit configurations. The handle connects through the Multi Interface Shoe, locks with screws and provides two professional XLR inputs with physical gain controls. With the handle fitted, the FX2 records up to four channels of 24-bit digital audio: two channels from the XLR handle and two from the body’s 3.5 mm input. The FX3 provides the same function with its handle, while the A7S III requires a separately purchased XLR-K3M adapter. The Multi Interface Shoe transfers digital audio in all three systems, supporting Sony wireless receivers and XLR units with a clean signal.
Other Ports: A Micro-USB Multi terminal supports older remotes and timecode adapters. The FX3 supports timecode jam sync through a BNC adapter on this port, and the FX2 is expected to retain the same compatibility for multi-camera synchronisation. The A7S III has no dedicated timecode input and normally relies on alternatives such as recording LTC through an audio channel.

Accessory Compatibility and Expandability
XLR Handle and Accessories: The Sony FX2 is designed for the professional Sony XLR-H1 audio handle, the same basic handle supplied with the FX3. It contains two XLR/TRS combination inputs and an ambient microphone, connects through the Multi Interface Shoe and is secured with screws. It provides both a carrying grip and phantom-powered XLR inputs. The handle can be purchased in the kit or added later. Sony launched the FX2 at approximately US$2,699 body-only or US$3,099 with the XLR handle. The A7S III does not include a comparable handle and requires the separate XLR-K3M adapter, which provides similar inputs but not the same robust carrying grip. The FX2 and FX3 are therefore cinema-oriented directly from the box, particularly when their handle options are included.
Lens and Lighting Accessories: All three cameras use Sony E-mount and accept full-frame E-mount lenses, adapted PL cinema lenses and other adapted systems. The FX2 adds a practical advantage through APS-C 4K, allowing Super 35 cinema lenses, adapted EF cinema lenses and APS-C E-mount lenses to produce 4K. The A7S III and FX3 cannot produce 4K in APS-C mode because the 12 MP sensor does not provide enough pixels in the cropped area and is limited to Full HD. The FX2 is therefore more flexible for users with an existing Super 35 lens collection.
External Monitor and Rig Equipment: Multiple 1/4-inch mounting points on the FX2 and FX3 allow monitors, lights, microphone supports and handles to be attached directly without a cage. The A7S III generally requires a camera cage before the same accessories can be mounted, adding weight and complexity. The integrated FX2 EVF can also reduce dependence on an external viewfinder or monitor, particularly for documentary operators who prefer eye-level or shoulder-height work.
Compatibility: As a Cinema Line camera, the FX2 is designed around accessories shared with the FX3 and FX6 ecosystem. Batteries, chargers, the XLR handle and wired remotes such as the RM-VPR1 are compatible across existing Sony equipment. Catalyst Browse and Catalyst Prepare can use the camera’s recorded gyro metadata for software stabilisation after filming, as with the A7S III and FX3.
Camera Control and Backup: The FX2 can function as a webcam over USB-C and supports tethered shooting through Sony Imaging Edge. Imaging Edge Mobile can remotely control all three cameras and transfer files. Five-gigahertz Wi-Fi can provide faster transfer than the original 2.4 GHz-only configuration associated with the A7S III at launch.
User Comments and Professional Opinions
After its announcement, the Sony FX2 received both praise and criticism. The general view was that it forms a hybrid bridge between the FX3 and the A7 series.
Professional Opinions — Advantages: CineD said the FX2 filled the useful space between the FX3 and FX30 and could be the best choice for the standard assignments required by many small production teams and content creators. The tilting EVF received particular praise because it is rare in this category. No Film School argued that the finder helped make the FX2 a genuinely hybrid cinema camera for many types of creator. PetaPixel considered the much lower price—approximately US$2,699 compared with around US$3,898 for the FX3—an important advantage, especially because the FX2 also provides a higher-resolution sensor, more advanced autofocus and an integrated viewfinder. B&H described it as a natural successor to the popular FX3 concept, adapting the hybrid design to current digital production without abandoning its core strengths. Professionals identified oversampled 4K quality, Super 35 lens flexibility, reliable long recording without overheating and stronger stills capability—including 33 MP Log-profile images—as the main advantages.
Professional Opinions — Disadvantages: The missing high-frame-rate modes and the character of the 33 MP sensor created the main doubts. PetaPixel noted that the FX3’s faster-readout sensor remains superior for functions such as 4K120 and that the FX2 makes a deliberate compromise. CineD also warned users to watch rolling shutter, because the readout limitations are familiar from the A7 IV sensor. The absence of open-gate recording was criticised by creators who want one 3:2 recording to be reframed for both 16:9 horizontal and 9:16 vertical delivery. Sony continued to omit the 5.9K or 6K open-gate functions found in competing Panasonic models. Professionals also returned to the missing internal ND filter. One comment praised the tilting EVF but expressed the hope that a future FX4 would finally add internal ND. The FX2 closes several gaps, but users still need larger Sony models for that function.
User Comments — Advantages: Early user impressions were generally positive. A7 IV owners often described the FX2 as an actively cooled A7 IV with an EVF, which was already attractive. One Reddit user summarised it as a hybrid of the FX and A families: FX3 ergonomics for video, A7 IV resolution for photography and an integrated viewfinder. The EVF was considered essential by many users who work outdoors or also shoot stills. Early tests found the 7K-downsampled 4K image highly detailed. S-Log3 and the ISO 4,000 second base were said to handle most low-light situations comfortably, with clean output towards approximately ISO 12,800, even though the A7S III remains stronger above that point. Dynamic Active stabilisation also stood out in vlog-style tests, with users describing an almost mechanical-gimbal effect despite the additional crop.
User Comments — Disadvantages: Some users focused on the perception that rolling shutter is worse than on the FX3. People familiar with the A7 IV warned that fast pans require care. One Reddit comment said the FX2 was full frame but had worse rolling shutter than both alternatives, while also acknowledging that its stills capability was better. Another user stressed that the 33 MP A7 IV sensor brings a 4K60 crop and higher rolling shutter, while the A7S line retains its unique low-resolution, fast-readout and low-light advantages. The FX2 does not fully replace the A7S III niche. Other criticisms included the lack of two CFexpress slots and the lower-resolution rear screen. Price comparisons produced an interesting split. The A7S III launched around US$3,500 and the FX3 around US$3,900, while the FX2 launched around US$2,700. Some users consequently considered the FX2 more logical than the A7S III because it delivers newer functions at a similar or lower price. Others said 4K120 was essential and remained uninterested.
Conclusion: The Sony FX2 introduces a new hybrid approach within the Cinema Line and blurs the boundary between stills and video. It balances the strengths of the A7S III and FX3—low light, fast readout and high frame rates—against the strengths of the A7 IV—high resolution, fine detail and an EVF.
Which camera is better depends entirely on the user’s priorities. When 4K120 or the most extreme low-light performance is critical, the A7S III and FX3 lead. When very sharp 4K with broad dynamic range, still photography and viewfinder use are important, the FX2 becomes attractive.
As one commentator put it, the FX2 provides what most content creators need. It gives up the FX3’s speed advantages, but may produce better results in the 24–60p range used most often in practice.
