Product Video Production: Lighting, Materials and Set Preparation

In product video production, the camera is rarely the first factor that determines whether an image feels premium. The surface is. Glass, polished plastic, brushed metal, fabric and matte card respond to light in different ways. A product can be made visible with almost any lamp; revealing its shape, texture and material quality requires deliberate control of direction, size and reflection.


Before choosing a lighting setup, decide which detail the customer needs to see: a readable label, the texture of a surface or the movement of a mechanism. A small change in product angle can solve a reflection problem that another lamp would only make worse. Good product lighting is not about making everything bright. It is about helping the viewer read the material correctly.

Why One Lighting Setup Does Not Work for Every Product

A light source does more than illuminate a product; reflective surfaces also reveal the entire environment around them. A glossy bottle may show the softbox, camera, crew and studio wall. The same large source can flatten a matte object and remove the modelling that gives it shape. A pre-built lighting diagram should therefore be treated as a starting point, not copied blindly from one product to the next.


The first inspection covers the surface, label, cap, edges and transparency. Light for a metallic edge may need to be controlled separately from light for the label. Separate passes are an option only when the product and camera movement can be repeated accurately; for a moving product or flowing liquid, a dependable in-camera setup may be the better choice.


A Material-Led Approach

Glass and Glossy Plastics

Glass and glossy plastic reflect both the light sources and their surroundings. A diffusion panel changes the size and shape of the source seen in the reflection; black and white cards control the adjacent tonal areas. The aim is to preserve highlights that describe the edges while keeping reflections away from essential label text. A transparent liquid may need a separate backlight and colour check.


Metal and Chrome

Metal often behaves like a mirror pointed at the studio. The goal is not to remove every reflection, but to create clean tonal transitions that describe the form. Black flags establish edges; broad white surfaces produce a smooth gradient. A small change in camera angle can alter the result completely, so camera and product positions are locked before repeatable movements begin.


Matte, Textile and Wood Surfaces

Matte materials depend less on reflections and more on texture and volume. Light arriving from a slight side angle can reveal fabric weave, wood grain or embossed detail. Flat frontal light may make the material lifeless, while an excessively hard side light can exaggerate imperfections. The balance depends on what the product should communicate.


Transparent and Translucent Products

Perfume, beverages, cosmetic gels and translucent packaging often benefit from backlighting, which reveals colour and density. That same light can make the label unreadable. The label, liquid and outer form may therefore be controlled as separate lighting layers and combined so the final image still feels natural.


Product Preparation Before the Set Is Built

  • Define the hero side, moving parts and details that must be demonstrated.

  • Inspect labels, caps, packaging and colour variants; damaged or misaligned samples should not reach the set.

  • Clean glass, metal and glossy plastic immediately before filming and keep gloves and air blowers nearby.

  • Prepare duplicate samples for liquids, food, cosmetics and delicate surfaces during longer shoots.

  • Confirm real dimensions, correct operating direction and any technical feature that must not be misrepresented.

  • Add safe areas for landscape, square and vertical deliveries to the shooting plan from the start.


Dust, fingerprints and a crooked label may look minor in one frame, but in moving footage they become tracking and clean-up problems across every shot. Preparation is usually faster and more reliable than repairing the same defect repeatedly in post-production.


Building the Lighting Setup

A controlled setup often begins with one key source. First the form is established; then separate layers are added for the label, background, edge and any transparent section. Fill light is not used to eliminate every shadow, but to set the intended contrast. Black surfaces, often called negative fill, create edges and volume by removing unwanted ambient reflection.


A larger diffusion surface creates a broader reflected area; a smooth gradient also depends on how the panel is lit and on the curvature of the product. Source height, product angle and card positions need to be adjusted together. A polarising filter may reduce certain reflections on non-metallic surfaces, but it is not a universal solution for glass, labels and metal in the same shot.


Camera Movement Must Explain the Product

Movement should not be added simply to make the image feel dynamic. It should reveal new information. A slow lateral move can show texture and allow light to travel across a surface. Rotation explains form. A top-down move can reveal packaging hierarchy. A hand entering the frame communicates scale, ergonomics and use.


  • Locked shot: for labels, shape and clear product information.

  • Slow slider or gimbal move: to reveal depth and changing surface reflections.

  • Turntable: for controlled, repeatable views around the product.

  • Macro detail: for texture, controls, connections or workmanship.

  • Slow motion: for liquids, powders, fabric, opening mechanisms or fast use actions.


The Shot List Starts with the Channel

A product page and a social launch do not need the same footage. In e-commerce, the viewer must understand what the item is and how it works quickly. Social platforms need a strong opening, vertical composition and shorter visual beats. Trade-fair screens may be watched without sound, while a sales presentation may require technical detail and a calmer pace.

Yes. A white or neutral background prioritises clarity, but the background still needs separate control so it remains clean, does not create uncontrolled reflections, and does not cause pale product edges to disappear.


Can Product Photography and Video Be Produced on the Same Day?
