The aim of product photography is not simply to make an item sharp and bright. It is to communicate material, colour, surface quality and scale in a single image to a customer who cannot handle the product. Reflections in glass, tonal transitions in metal, textile texture and accurate matte packaging colour cannot be solved with one universal lighting diagram.
Stills and video can share a set, but the viewer may inspect a photograph for longer. Dust, fingerprints, crooked labels, colour shifts and perspective errors become more visible. Preparing the product and reviewing images on a larger monitor is safer than assuming every problem can be repaired later.
Good product photography makes an item easier to understand without changing what it is.
Define the Type of Image First
Packshot: A clear commercial image presenting form and packaging on a controlled background.
White background and cut-out: Standardised files for e-commerce, catalogues and graphic layouts.
Concept image: A product placed within props, surfaces, colour and light that support the brand world.
Lifestyle image: The product shown with a person, space or real-use context.
Macro detail: A close view of texture, workmanship, ingredients, controls or a small feature.
One product may need several of these. The primary e-commerce image, social campaign still and catalogue detail serve different purposes. The shot list should follow the sales channels.
Material Determines the Lighting Decision
Glass, Perfume and Transparent Packaging
Glass reflects the large surfaces around it. Two clean edge lines can define the bottle, a backlight can reveal the liquid, and a separate front source can preserve label readability. Removing every reflection may make glass look like dull plastic; the objective is controlled reflection.
Metal, Jewellery and Glossy Surfaces
Polished metal reflects the sources, cards and studio around it. Broad white surfaces create controlled light areas, while black cards help define the outline. On a small reflective object, changing the camera or product angle slightly can be more useful than increasing lamp output. A controlled side light can reveal weave and surface texture; its angle and apparent size matter more than brightness alone. In food, preserve the actual colour and surface appearance. Colour differences can mislead a customer, particularly with fabrics, cosmetics and surface finishes. Use a consistent lighting setup, fixed white balance and an appropriate colour reference. Review the selected file on a calibrated display and agree colour-sensitive decisions against the physical sample. These controls improve consistency; they do not make every consumer screen identical.
No production can make every consumer screen identical. The practical aim is to create the most consistent representation possible in a controlled environment. Customer colour approval may be appropriate for cosmetics, textiles, furniture and coated materials.
Product Preparation Comes Before Retouching

Props should explain the product rather than compete with it. The palette is derived from the brand and target audience. Texture and colour may lead in cosmetics, ingredients and use in food, and material and function in technology.
Composition also protects space for page design and copy. A landscape banner, square social image and vertical story do not have to be random crops of one frame. Small adjustments to camera and product position create purpose-built alternatives.
Focus and Detail Management
In close-up photography, the front and back of a small product may not both be sharp in one exposure. For a static subject, frames focused at different distances can be combined through focus stacking. The camera, subject and lighting must remain consistent. Inspect edges and transparent areas for halos or blending faults; the technique extends front-to-back sharpness, not the physical depth or shape of the product.
Excessive sharpening can invent surface defects and make an item look artificial. Detail is balanced for the final print or screen size.
Retouching Boundaries
Dust, fingerprints and temporary surface marks can be removed.
Background and product edges can be refined.
Colour and contrast can be balanced against the real sample.
Lens-related perspective can be corrected against the real shape. A recurring defect in the product being sold must not be hidden as though it were a temporary sample blemish.
Parts, texture, volume or colour that do not exist should not be invented.
Legal labels, ingredients, safety marks and technical information must not be altered.
Advertising aesthetics can make the product desirable, but the image should not create a false expectation. Accurate representation has priority in primary e-commerce imagery.
Maintaining Standards in Batch Photography
Product position, camera height, focal length, light output and composition are marked. One representative item is photographed and approved before the full catalogue continues. A checklist confirms that every item and required angle has been completed.
Different materials within one range should not be forced under one light. Consistency can be maintained through product scale, background and colour management, while surface-specific lighting is adjusted.
Approve One Product Before Photographing the Range
An illustrative acceptance check for a packshot has three parts. First, compare the sample and image for colour, proportions, supplied parts and label accuracy. Next, inspect dust, focus and masking at full resolution. Finally, place the image into the actual page layout to check crop, whitespace and text placement. Approval at only one of these scales can miss a usable-image problem.
A white-background photograph is not automatically a transparent cut-out. Define whether the final file needs the original shadow, a retained reflection, clean transparency or a specific background colour. Glass edges and semi-transparent parts need special attention, and a mask that looks clean on white should also be checked against the background on which it will actually be used.
Can Photography and Product Video Be Planned Together?
